Tatsuya Nakadai stars in this austere 17th century samurai drama directed by Masaki Kobayashi. A period of peace reigns in the early Tokugawa Shogunate. Many established samurai houses are eradicated leaving thousands of unemployed samurai roaming the cities looking for work with surviving clans. Some ronin looking to gain either position or a quick handout start showing up at the noble houses asking for permission to commit harakiri on the houses’s premises. What follows is literally gut-wrenching as Kobayashi and Nakadai move the dismal narrative along one frame at a time. I highly recommend this film.
